Garlic prices in a Serbian town skyrocketed after officials warned people about vampires' risk of attack.
The warning of the town of Bajina Basta in western Serbia was announced after an abandoned water plant on the banks of the Rogacia River and in the village of Zarozje completely collapsed. It is rumored that a vampire named Sava Savanovic used to live in that factory and suck blood from those who went to the factory to get water, the Austrian Times reported.
The Jagodic family in the town used to buy a water plant, but they did not dare to operate it. Later they came up with a unique way to make money: promoting the factory for visitors to visit it during the day. Although the business progressed smoothly, the Jagodic family did not dare to repair or upgrade the water plant because they were worried that vampires would be angry if its shelter was violated. So the factory collapsed. Locals believe that vampires are wandering after becoming homeless.
"People feel worried, because everyone knows the vampire legend in the water plant. They think it will find a new shelter and it can attack people during the search process , " Miodrag Vujetic , the town mayor said.
Vujetic stressed that outsiders can laugh when they know the town government has issued warnings about vampires, but most townspeople believe vampires exist.
"The town council advised people to hang garlic on the main door and windows to stop vampires, because vampires are afraid of garlic. We also remind people to place crosses in every room of the house." , mayor acknowledged.
