Since 1999 when the International Organization for Internet Technology (Internet Engineering Task Force) announced SIP, hundreds of manufacturers have started business with SIP-enabled servers and phones. SIP also plays a key role in many multimedia applications such as instant messaging, video, online games .

In particular, a few years ago, the VoIP community rated SIP as the leading protocol for signal transmission over the Internet. This technology has become an important component of IP networks that integrate data (text) and voice. For example, companies can save money when using only a single line to a desktop PC using IP (no need for a second line for a traditional phone). Meanwhile, the computer acts as a softphone phone, allowing users to make calls by selecting the phone number in the contacts on the PC.

Besides Internet phone application, SIP is now widely deployed in e-commerce. As an HTTP-based protocol, SIP supports easy integration of voice with other Web services to implement multimedia communications such as video conferencing, online exchanges . Analysts say SIP will have a strong position in wireless technology and third-generation mobile networks (3G). The famous telecom group WorldCom has also opened up a SIP technology business and collaborated with Microsoft to support the protocol in the Windows XP Server beta.

In Vietnam, the SIP has only been introduced into international Internet telephony service since the end of 2005. VDC and Saigon Postel are also investing in technology and transmission lines to launch new services using the SIP protocol.

Domestic suppliers will have to invest even more in order for new applications to be widely accepted in the market, but it is undeniable that in 2006 the SIP application will be well-known in the IT industry and Vietnam telecommunications.
