Snuppy the first cloned dog in the world.
On March 8, 2006, scientists confirmed that the dog Snuppy originated from hunting dogs like Afghanistan, the world's first cloned dog.
The Seoul National University team of experts and US researchers conducted DNA tests from blood samples from Snuppy's cloned dog, cloned stem cells and cells from his mother's dog, pregnant with Snuppy.
The results showed that Snuppy was cloned by scientific researchers led by Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk.
Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk once lost credibility, caused controversy and was questioned and investigated simultaneously with three other scientists on March 3 last.
Elaine Ostrander of the National Institute of Human Genetics at Bethesda, USA, said: " These figures confirm that the dog Snuppy is made from the stem cell of the dog Tai (the dog for cells) ".
Seoul National University investigating committee and Ostrander's research team all published their findings in January 2006. Their findings were published in the most recent Nature Journal.
The study of stem cells has brought hope to patients suffering from serious diseases from diabetes to Parkinson's disease.
Stem cells are the most important cells capable of developing into any cell type of the human body.
Scientists believe that they can use this research to create treatments for new diseases. But their use is still controversial because potential stem cells are removed from human embryos.
