In front of the situation of oil on the surface of the water often encountered on the surface of rivers and canals polluting people 's living water and affecting domestic organisms, the group of students Phan Phuoc Duy, Tran Trung Hoang, Vo Phi Thoan (class 10A2, An Lac Thon High School, Ke Sach, Soc Trang) conducted experiments comparing oil absorbency ability of materials such as coconut fiber, bagasse and cotton.
Since then, they have found that the best material is cotton to treat oil contaminated water without destroying the environment. Their topic surpassed 1,221 national students' exams to win the first prize of the national competition "Improving the use and protection of water resources for high school and vocational high school students" . Overcoming the two topics won the second prize " Improving and using water" by Truong Quang Bao, class 10B9, high school Nguyen Hue, Hue and the topic "Improving the use and protection of water resources through media "of the group of students Bui Thi Thuy Duong, Hoang Thi Phuong Thao, 11th grade of Thai Nguyen specialized high school, the topic" Gonzo cotton for oil contaminated water "was selected to participate in the annual international competition. in Sweden.
According to the Organizing Committee, the topic represents the criteria of the competition: A mini science project, proposing new ideas associated with the surrounding environment conditions, experimentally, applied practical, effective for the community.
In addition, the first prize in the competition was highly appreciated by being associated with a current issue of oil spilling along Vietnamese coasts.
This is a contest in the framework of the Stockholm award on world water resources established by the Stockholm Foundation every year for scientists. Since 1994, the Stockholm Prize began to add an award for high school students in Sweden and by 1997 it expanded worldwide.
The contest, which is likened to the Nobel Prize for students in the field of environmental protection with the annual highest award, is a drop-shaped glass ball that is awarded by the Swedish princess personally at the Royal Palace.
