Solar power plant operates at night

The world's first night-operated solar power plant officially went into operation.

The Germasolar solar power plant , located near the city of Seville (Spain), is designed to work at night. This £ 260 million power plant includes a tower with large power bulbs on top and is surrounded by 2,600 spherical mirrors.

The Germasolar plant uses reflective mirrors to concentrate heat energy into two salt tanks. Heat energy up to 900 ° C will melt salt, boil water around two salt pools and create steam that causes turbines to spin.

Renewable energy technology such as using wind turbines often depends very much on weather conditions. If there is no wind, the generator turbines will stop working. Meanwhile, the technology of the Germasolar solar power plant can overcome this limitation.

Torresol Group, the investor of the Germasolar power plant, said on the Daily Mail : 'Salt in a tank is heated by heat energy from the Sun. This helps store heat for use when there is no sunlight. '

Expected, Germasolar will achieve 70% of design capacity next year. Torresol Company is also planning to build a similar but larger-scale factory in South Africa.

Environmentalists highly appreciate the construction project of Germasolar power plant. Dr. Chris Haslam, author of the book How to Stop Climate Change, said: 'This is a big breakthrough for solar energy technology. Germasolar can be selected as the standard for building solar power plants in the future. '
