Bob Rubin, a stingray specialist at Santa Rosa College in the US, said that Mobula rays often gather in large groups, with the number of thousands. They also often leap out of the water so they are called flying rays.
"Tens of stingrays stuck on the coast are a strange phenomenon for me. For many years I have worked in the Gulf of California, where a lot of Mobula rays live, and I have never seen them suffer. The blood appears on the pectoral fins of the rays, so they may have collided with the boat, kicked or crashed into each other , " Rubin said.
But Rubin stressed that, if he did not know the composition of the stomach food of rays and the status of their gills, he could not predict what caused them to run aground.
"The loud noise in the water, electrical signals can cause rays to lose their orientation. But that's just my guess , " he commented.
The body width of Mobula rays can reach 5.2m, while the weight can reach a ton.
