Super Italy volcano is about to wake up, threatening half a million people

Scientists discovered that volcanic Campi Flegrei in Naples, Italy showed signs of waking up and could affect half a million people living in the area if an eruption occurred.

The research team at the Institute of Volcanology and Geophysics in Bologna said that the volcano Campi Flegrei in Italy shows signs of awakening with the possibility of an eruption affecting more than half a million people in the region, RT December 21 reported.

Campi Flegrei , also known as Phlegraean Fields , is a large volcanic region west of Naples, Italy, one of the most populous areas in the world. It has a basin of 13km wide and is mostly underwater.

Scientists began tracking Campi Flegrei volcano since 2005. They discovered an increase in activity at a low level, as well as deformation of the ground and lava in the area. The study, published in the December 20 issue of Nature Communications, says that when lava levels pass a certain threshold, it can accelerate the release of liquids and gases.

"Hydrothermal will lose mechanical resistance if it is heated, leading to an emergency that may occur sooner," Giovanni Chiodini researcher answered AFP.

The ability and duration of volcanic eruptions has not been accurately determined. However, if this situation occurs, it will be very dangerous for people.

"The fact that more than half a million people live in areas near the basin makes it difficult for local authorities to solve the situation," the study writes.

According to Chiodini, due to the high population density in Naples, the study of volcanic activity Campi Flegrei is becoming an urgent task for scientists.
