Researcher Maxime Aubert and his team used a technique called uranium chain , which involves analyzing layers of mineral calcite formed on top of the picture for years, as well as the underlying materials. . They took a sample smaller than 1cm and found a picture of an animal made at least 40,000 years ago and maybe nearly 52,000 years ago.

This discovery adds to the evidence that paintings on caves have appeared not only in Europe as we once thought. Aubert said: 'We can see that symbolic art grows more or less simultaneously in both Asia and Europe.'

For many years, cave art was thought to have emerged from Europe, where famous works were discovered and dated in Spain, Italy and France. But the paintings found in Indonesia challenged that theory.

Aubert intends to experiment with other works of art in Indonesia, as well as works in Australia, and says he feels a personal connection to the past when viewing these paintings.
