Surprised by the sacrificial dog skeleton 1,000 years ago in Peru

Scientists believe that sacrificial dog remains belong to the rituals of the Ychsma, during the period from 900 AD to 1470.

According to IBTimes, archaeologists unearthed the ancient tomb inside the zoo Parque de las Leyendas, Peru. Next to a human skeleton, they discovered the remains of about 10 dogs also buried together. Accordingly, the dogs were tied to their feet and had a tight string in their necks.

Scientists suspect that these are sacrificed animals about 1,000 years ago. For a period of 1 year from 2012-2013, the scientific team made a historical discovery when it discovered 134 remains and more than 138 dog bones dating back about 1,000 years.

They assumed that they belonged to the Ychsma ritual , from the period of 900 AD to 1470.

Ancient Peruvian people do not have the custom of burial with animals, especially dogs. So this discovery is quite strange. Dogs are buried next to people, not in graveyards reserved for them. Analysis initially suspected that they were strangled and buried with people as sacrifices in burial rituals.

Scientists have not yet pinpointed the purpose of these actions and why they took place in what is now the Parque de las Leyendas zoo.

Dogs are identified by both sexes. Each has a big string in the neck, the legs are tight, about 42cm high, weighs 12kg and has brown hair.

Lucenida Carrion, the head of the study, said: "Dogs are fastened to stone. Straps at the neck. We think these are sacrificial animals in burial rituals."

Many theories suggest that the ancient Ychsma buried with dogs as sacrifices to God to guide them in their life after death was in heaven.
