Sweeping the ear with a cotton swab (or other objects) will push the earwax deeper into the inside, causing the eardrum to not vibrate effectively and damage the hearing.

Perhaps most of us own at least one pack of cotton swabs in the house, so that sometimes ... itchy ears can be pulled out to clean.
