The ancient sword was most likely buried by a noble family as a sacrifice.

Puigpunyent has many megalithic structures dating from 1000-6000 BC, built by the Tailiotic community. Archaeologist Guillem Rossello Bordoy first excavated these structures in the 1950s.
Jaume Deya and Pablo Galera, the two leading archaeologists of the research team, commented the discovery of the sword was a major surprise. They thought they would find nothing more because the scientists dug up the site for years. Moreover, megalithic structures here have also been looted.
This is the first sword found at the Talaiot del Serral de ses Abelles. For thousands of years, it has remained in good condition, except for a part of its broken tongue.
It seems that the ancients intentionally placed the sword here. This led experts to believe that they buried it as a sacrifice. The megalithic structure can be an important religious site, a place of rituals, or a place of defense. Many thought that the sword was buried after 600 BC, when the Talaiotic civilization weakened. Most likely it was the sacrificial item of a noble family.
Scientists are studying the sword in hopes of gathering more information about the Talaiotic civilization. They can learn the origin and its role in Talaiotic culture. The sword shows that the weapon was also used as a sacrifice, and pointed out the megalithic structures may have been the site of a religious ceremony. The Majorca Museum intends to display this ancient sword.
