The earthquake is 6.4 magnitude Richter causing turmoil in Indonesia

The magnitude 6.4 earthquake in northern Maluku province in the early morning of 8/6 caused residents to panic . Indonesian authorities later did not give a warning about the risk of tsunami.

The earthquake epicenter was located 126km northwest of Ternate island, at a depth of 58km, according to Indonesia's Geological and Meteorological Agency (BMKG).

Spokesman The Indonesian National Disaster Prevention Agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the 10-second earthquake caused turmoil in residential areas on Ternate Island. The earthquake caused at least 18 houses to be damaged but did not cause human consequences.

After the earthquake there were two more aftershocks with the strongest intensity measured at 4.3 on the Richter scale, the director of the earthquake and earthquake warning center of BMKG, Mr. Mochammad Riyadi said.

"Although the epicenter of the earthquake lies deep in the sea, but the tremor is not strong enough to cause oceanic shift, leading to a tsunami," Mochammad said.
