Earthquake 6.5 degrees shaking Indonesia

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake shook the island of Java, Indonesia, causing at least one person to die, many homes were damaged.

The earthquake center at a depth of 92km, about 52km southwest of Tasikmalaya city, according to the US Geological Survey. Indonesia's national disaster management agency said the earthquake triggered a tsunami warning system in the southern Java island but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not report any tsunamis, according to Reuters.

People in the central and western Java feel the shaking. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the disaster control agency, said at least one person died, many houses were destroyed and a hospital had to evacuate. He posted photos of people searching in collapsed buildings.

The earthquake shook the buildings in seconds in Jakarta.

Java, the most densely populated island in Indonesia, is home to more than half of the country's 250 million inhabitants.
