The epicenter is located in Baluchistan province, the most sparsely populated region of Pakistan, the US Geological Survey said. The earthquake occurred at 1:30 (local time) below a depth of about 84km.

According to Pakistan's leading meteorologist Arif Mahmood, the epicenter is located in a remote area, southwest of the capital Quetta of Baluchistan province about 320km, not far from the Afghan border.

The town closest to the epicenter was Dalbandin, with about 15,000 people. There is no information about damage at Dalbandin.

Another town near the epicenter is Karan. However, according to Fateh Bangar, a Karan official, there was no significant damage here. He said the town is about 70km from the epicenter.

Nasir Baluch, a policeman in Karan, said that many earthen houses in an area outside the town called Mashkil have collapsed or been damaged. There has been no information about casualties, but the area is sparsely populated.

People also said there was no major damage in Quetta, but the earthquake caused panic throughout the city.

Local television reported that the earthquake was felt in many provinces. Many people in the country's largest city, Karachi, ran to the street when an earthquake struck.

' I jumped out of bed when I knew there was an earthquake, ' said a 28-year-old resident.

The tremor that lasted for at least 20 seconds was felt at Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and in the Indian capital of New Delhi.

Earthquakes often occur in the area. A 7.6 richter earthquake on October 8, 2005 killed 80,000 people in northwest Pakistan and Kashmir and left more than 3 million people homeless.
