Although Cabo Uruguay is the only village in Uruguay to live without electricity and running water, it still attracts many visitors.
Cabo Pilonio is a small fishing village by the sea, in the land protruding to the Atlantic Ocean, in the east coast of Uruguay. Due to being separated by a large sand dune, Cabo Polonio is isolated from other regions. The village is only 7km away from the main highway but there is no access road. The only way to get to the village is by walking or two-wheeled vehicles (4-wheel drive vehicles) through sand dunes.
There are no houses in Cabo Pilonio with electricity and running water, including drainage. Only a few businesses use electricity from generators, solar batteries, and wind power to light up. At the farthest point of the village is an active lighthouse, the only place of Cabo Pilonio connected to the grid. People also have the habit of taking clean water to live from dug wells or store rainwater.
The lighthouse is the only place in the village to be connected to the grid. From here you can observe two islands in the east and north and observe seals living on the island.
The best thing about Cabo Polonio is the beach with clear blue water , smooth sand and the sea lion sanctuary.
This village is one of the places with the most sea lions living in South America. They mainly reside on two islands located to the east and north of the village with the peninsula's tip, so when people stand on the lighthouse it is easy to see. In addition, in September and October every year, visitors can also observe whales seeking refuge in calm seawater.
The village has several hundred houses but there is no electricity, business households use solar batteries or wind power to have electricity.
The village is relatively quiet around May - September. Only a few animal lovers, whale scientists, seals and fishermen have come here. But in the summer, the quiet coastal village becomes one of the most popular tourist destinations in Uruguay.
Cabo Polonio is also home to the darkest sky and the brightest moon night of the coast of Uruguay. The reason is that the village is rare and there are no street lights at night.
Although there is almost no electricity and water, the village still develops a series of restaurants and motels to serve tourists, but most of them choose to rent houses to stay. Today Cabo Polonio has added phone and Internet service.
With its natural and poetic beauty and water-free living conditions, the village of Cabo Polonio is one of Argentina and Brazil's favorite destinations in the summer.
The only place for visitors to charge their phones is a grocery store and only when the generator runs. At night in the village people will experience life under the candlelight.
