The first train powered by biodiesel
This first European ship will operate in Dorset (England) in an effort to make the rail industry more environmentally friendly.
The train, Virgin Voyager, will be used on the Weymouth service to Waterloo in a six-month trial, and passengers will not see anything different from a regular train. Virgin uses a mixed fuel containing 20% of biodiesel, a cooperative product between the Association of Railroad Companies and the British Railways Standards and Safety Commission.
If successful, the ship will switch to using 100% new fuel, helping to cut 14% of greenhouse gas CO 2 . Ship owner Richard Branson said the conversion to Voyager, if tested successfully, would be equivalent to withdrawing 23,000 cars a year from the street.
