The giant Pacific Island trash island will be cleared with this wonderful system

The garbage island in the middle of the Pacific is about the size of 3 European countries. Clearing garbage here seems impossible.

In the middle of the Pacific, there is a giant island made of . garbage. It is abbreviated as GPGP , located between California and Hawaii and has an area larger than all three countries Germany, France, and Spain added.

According to a recent study, it accumulated more than 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic waste, equivalent to 79 thousand tons of plastic, brought here by ocean currents.

This trash island accumulates over 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic waste.

Garbage here is mainly used for fishing vessels and fishing gear, including nets and ropes. This huge amount of plastic waste kills more than 100,000 marine animals each year, including whales, dolphins and seals.

For many years, hundreds of environmental projects have been studied and tested to rescue this sea, but have not produced positive results.

But luckily, the Dutch Ocean Cleanup non-profit organization, recently had a good sign. They are about to launch the world's first ocean cleaning system, with extremely high levels of feasibility.

Representatives revealed that this special system was huge, up to 610m long and was located in Alameda, California. It will serve as a plastic waste barrier floating to the world's largest garbage island.

The system is made of HDPE plastic that is flexible to bend in waves, hard to form a U-shaped fence to retain floating waste.

Nylon screens underneath prevent plastic waste without endangering marine animals. The large floating anchor at a depth of hundreds of meters below the water surface is stable for the barrier, so that the system moves in the ocean current more slowly than the garbage allows the garbage collection on the front.

Every 6-8 weeks the ships will come to take the garbage to the mainland for recycling.

This complex system will kick off from San Francisco Bay within a few weeks and will begin its official operation in July this year, and will expand its reach later.

In particular, this promising system is the brainchild of the Dutch teen prodigy, Boyan Slat. He gave a presentation about his ocean cleaning machine at the Tedx talk six years ago.

Although he received a lot of mixed opinions from scientists, Slat steadfastly came up with his ideas and pursued it for the past 6 years. Until now, Slat confidently affirmed that cleaning up the world's oceans is extremely urgent, and humanity is fully feasible.

Global sea and citizen activists are expecting the success of this potential project, because in addition to the Pacific garbage island, the world is "owning" many other alarming landfills, including one in the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean with two beaches in the Atlantic.

"Besides, the management and education of citizens' awareness of marine ocean protection is also an important task to avoid creating any other landfill for humanity" - Ocean Cleanup representative shared .
