Volta artificial lake has the largest area in the world located in Ghana (East Africa). The artificial lake with the largest water volume is Lake Bratsk on the Angara River, Russia.

Akosombo Dam on the Volta River was put into use in 1966. It provides energy for a very large hydroelectric power plant.

This dam is built near a large gully. Behind it, water is contained in the valley of the main river and its tributaries forming a 8.484km2 hole, the lake's circumference is 7,250km.

Lake Valta is quite shallow, in some places one can see areas that stop flooding under water. The total volume of water here is 148km 3 . Lake Bratsk in Russia has a water volume of 169.25 km 3 .
