Not Rome or Paris, not Sydney or San Francisco, Chester - the most beautiful city in the world is probably a city you've never even heard of.
Chester's iconic 4-faced clock tower is more than 400 years old.
In a latest study called Eye-catching Architecture commissioned by Online Mortgage Advisors, the walled church town of Chester in northwest England, close to the Welsh border and with a population of around 120,000 people, have risen to the top. Venice (Italy) is in second place and London (UK) is in third place.
The architecture of the city of Chester is closest to the golden ratio.
The ranking is determined based on scale assessments of buildings in the city based on the 1:1.618 "golden ratio" matching calculations. This is the ratio that was drawn up by ancient mathematicians when it comes to the architecture of buildings. This ratio is even found in the natural world, including leaves and barks.
According to this study, the architecture of the city of Chester is closest to the golden ratio, at 83.7%. Meanwhile, Venice is behind with 83.3% and London with 83%. To determine this number, the researchers used Google views to scan images of thousands of buildings in historic cities around the world. They then plotted the points at each corner of the buildings to determine their proportions. Those ratios are then compared to the golden ratio (1:1.618) to see how well they fit.

However, with the latest research based on the golden ratio of antiquity, Chester - a city of about 120,000 people - rises to the top.
