The project built an underground laboratory

A 22-member committee of the US National Science Foundation (NSF) agreed to choose the Homestake gold mine in South Dakota to build a large underground laboratory.

DUSEL laboratory will receive research on particle physics, microbiology, geology or engineering department. It will be located on many floors underground, the deepest floor is 2,250m. This will be where physicists perform many experiments to understand the properties of antimatter or neutrinos.

Many research projects have been introduced at DUSEL. Basic particle studies need to be protected to avoid surface interactions that can be misleading.

The DUSEL project must also wait for the approval of NSF and the National Science Office before building the laboratory. The budget also needs approval from the government and Congress. The South Dakota Board funded $ 35 million for mine rehabilitation. A billionaire resident in Dakota, Denny Sanford, also plans to donate $ 70 million to the project. If all goes well, the project will be completed in 2011.
