A volcano in southern Japan today suddenly erupted, causing the highest level of alarm and causing people to evacuate.

The AP reported Shindake volcano , located on the small island of Kuchinoerabu, erupting at around 10 am this morning (local time), radiating black smoke from the sky.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has raised the level of volcanic alert to level 5, the highest level.

Nobuaki Hayashi, head of a village on the island, said about 100 people are at a local evacuation center.

" There was a huge explosion, then black smoke rose, darkening the sky ," he said. "There is a smell of sulfur" .

No one has been injured despite lava , rock and hot air from the volcano has spilled over to the northwestern edge of the island. Officials are using helicopters to survey and assess damages.

A ferry is on its way to the island to evacuate people.

All Nippon Airways said it will divert some flights to Okinawa and Southeast Asia to take precautions, but there are no plans to cancel flights.

About 140 people are living on Kuchinoerabu Island , in the Ryukyu Islands, 80 km southwest of the large island of Kyushu. Tourism and fisheries are the main activities on the island with a large area of ​​this hill and forest.

Shindake volcano once erupted in August last year, the first time since 1980.
