The winter is prolonged due to the North Pole spiral moving

Climate change has made the situation of ice melting in the North Pole worse. That is also the reason why the winter lasts longer and more and more severe.

Recent research by a group of scientists from Leed University, Korea University and Peking University has shown that the North Pole spiral is moving. This process will prolong the winter of the east coast of America and part of Europe with very low temperatures.

The North Pole is the area where cold air swirls around the North Pole during the winter. When a part of this spiral is split and broken into pieces, these cold air masses can cause sudden cold waves in late winter and early spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

But the truth is that little is known of the existence of two swirls , one in the stratosphere (height of 19,800m) and one in the troposphere (altitudes of 5,500 - 9,100m). The weather forecasts only focus on the convection on the troposphere with influence on medium latitude cities like New York. Recent research focuses on the cyclone in the stratosphere with a much wider and deeper impact on the weather.

After much analysis of weather data over the past three decades, the team has found that the North Pole spiral in the stratosphere is moving toward the European continent and is getting weaker.

When the spiral tends to weaken, the winter will be longer and colder.

It seems that the climate will get warmer as the swirl weakens, but when the spiral weakens, the cold air masses of the North Pole will easily escape and spill into the surrounding areas. When the vortex is strong, the cold air mass is trapped inside the vortex like a polar container.

The weakening of the North Pole has been noticed and studied over the past few years, but this new study also shows the movement of the spiral from North America to the Eurasian continent in February every year. This is the reason for the low temperature in the US East Coast.

"Meteorological changes are very complicated but research has shown that this change has led to a stream of cold air overflowing the East Coast in March, leading to lower temperatures than normal," Jason Samenow reported. in the Washington Post.

Although this solidarity is still very fragile, the main problem here is the relationship that the research team found. However, the amount of melting ice in the North Sea related to the movement of the vortex is very difficult to determine.

Scientists in the research group have acknowledged that there are many issues that have not been clarified and need to be researched but the greatest value found is the relationship between the amount of ice lost and the change of the ring. North pole vortex.

The study has been published in the journal Natural Climate Change.
