The world's most arid desert turns into a colorful sea of flowers

The sea of flowers stretching from the eyes suddenly blooms on the desert land all year round with almost no rain in Chile.

The Atacama Desert in Chile, the area considered by the United States Aerospace Agency (NASA) to be the driest on Earth, transformed itself almost overnight after a vacant land stretching into a colorful sea of flowers. That's because heavy rains in mid-August caused thousands of flowers to bloom, according to National Geographic.

This phenomenon is called florido (desert bloom) , which occurs periodically at Atacama. The time of flower sea appear after 5-7 years / time, but the flowering season this year is only two years before hatching (2015).

Authorities said that more flowers will bloom in the coming weeks because some species germinate later than others. More than 200 different flower species can be found in the desert.

The phenomenon of blooming flowers happens not only in Atacama but in every desert with a large number of perennial flowers. Although blooming simultaneously, flowers often die quickly due to the harsh environment of the desert.

Seeds of perennial plants in the desert often lie dormant for months or years and are difficult to identify. Only when the rain poured down washed away the protective shell, the seed just sprouted. In early spring, Chile had heavy rainfall, creating ideal conditions for flowers to bloom a few years earlier than expected.
