The wreck found 139 years ago in Alaska

A team of divers found the remains of the US ship Torrent sunk off the coast of Alaska 139 years ago. The Torrent ship carrying 155 passengers was hit by coral and sunk near Port Graham in 1868.

Before the Torrent ship sank nearly a year, the United States bought Alaska from Russia. Sailors on the Torrent were ordered to build the first American fortress in the mainland of Alaska. When the ship wrecked, these sailors had to camp on a nearby beach for 18 days waiting for rescue.

Last July, a team of four-person divers led by Steve Lloyd found traces of the Torrent. Lloyd's team found a group of objects, from guns, artillery, shoes and discs. The main findings include two anchors, a hull section and a copper wheel hinge weighing about 45 pounds. However, they did not publish this discovery at the request of staff who preserved American state history, because they wanted more time to find more evidence on the wreck's location.

The oldest American shipwreck in Alaska is the Eclipse fur merchant ship sunk on August 11, 1807 on Shumagin Island in the southern Alaska Peninsula. However, until now, no trace of this ship has been found.
