Nyda villagers in the Yamalo-Nenets autonomous region, Russia, lie above the Arctic Circle, discovering thousands of snowballs of different sizes from October 28. The smallest fruit is as big as a tennis ball while the largest is as big as a basketball.
"The spheres appear in the same place as if there is a squeeze. They have many small sizes. We are all very surprised. Many people only really believe it when they see it firsthand. This phenomenon has never happened. out of the past, there was not much snow in the area. The scenery was very interesting , " said Ekaterina Chernykh, a local resident.
"When the water in the bay rises, it comes in contact with ice. The beach starts to get covered with ice. As the water recedes, the ice stays. The patches of ice roll on the wet sand and become spheres." , Valery Akulov, the head of the village, explained.
According to Sergey Lisenkov, spokesman for the Institute of Arctic and Antarctic Research (AARI), this is a rare natural phenomenon. Slippery ice mixed with mud under the influence of wind, coastal roads and temperature, rolling down the slope and creating snowballs. The same phenomenon happened in Lake Michigan, USA, in 2014.
