Thousands of years of wrecks containing gold coins in the Egyptian sea

Egyptian archaeologists found the bodies of three shipwrecks dating back thousands of years to contain gold coins and crystal statues.

The wreck finds off the coast of Alexandria north of Egypt, filled with ancient artifacts, built during Roman times, when the empire spreads across Europe and North Africa, according to Newsweek.

Inside the thousands of years old wrecks, archaeologists found three gold coins produced under Augustus (full name Augustus Caesar Octavian) the first emperor of the Roman Empire. They also discovered a sculpture of a human head carved from crystal, fragments of ceramics and large pieces of wood that could fall from the wreck.

Augustus crowned after his famous uncle was assassinated. He was instrumental in bringing peace and stability to the Greek-Roman world for 40 years of reign.

Mostafa Waziri, the head of the Supreme Antiquities Council, confirmed the discovery in a statement on the Facebook page of the Egyptian Antiquities Ministry on November 21. The finding is the result of a joint project between the Underwater Archeology Department of the European Ministry of Antiquities and the Archaeological Institute of Europe.

Osama Al-Nahas, head of the underwater archeology department, said the Al-Ahram area on eastern Alexandria still has many antiques. According to Al-Nahas, the fourth wreck can be found when experts conduct further cooperation projects in 2018.
