Tissue culture helps preserve the gene pool of yellow-taro

The topic 'Application of tissue culture technology to produce yellow-floor sweet potatoes in Phu Tho province' not only preserves the source of the yellow-floor sweet potato, but also solves the problem of seed source of ethnic minorities in mountainous districts of Thanh Son , Tan Son, Phu Tho province in growing golden specialty sweet potatoes in the locality.

Golden sweet potato trees have been cultivated for a long time in the mountainous districts of Thanh Son and Tan Son. This is a delicious sweet potato, a specialty of ethnic minorities, which is well known.

However, the cultivation of yellow-floor sweet potato is spontaneous and has not applied advanced farming techniques, so it has not fully utilized its potential.

Head of No village, Yen Luong commune, Thanh Son district (Phu Tho) Tran Van Vinh said that so far, people of No, Bo Xo and Quat villages in Yen Luong commune often breed golden sweet potatoes in the traditional way. That is, after harvest (about October 12 every year), small, pest-free potatoes will be buried in the ground on the mountain, waiting for the new crop (every February), people will go to dig every hole The soil picks up potatoes and grows into other soil holes. Doing this traditional way takes a lot of time and effort, but the proportion of good quality potatoes is not high.

From that fact, the Center for Agricultural Biological Experiments of High Technology - Agricultural Genetics Institute conducted a research on the topic of "Application of tissue culture technology to produce yellow-floor sweet potatoes in Phu Tho province". .

The topic has focused on surveying the status of yellow floor potato production, assessing natural conditions, distribution of cultivated land, farming practices, yields, preservation of seedlings of local people . to proceed. building a quick multiplication process of yellow sweet potato seed by tissue culture method.

After two years of implementation, the project has produced 10,000 yellow seedling seedlings for tissue culture, homogenous, disease-free, serving as the first step for the construction of a garden producing yellow potato root varieties.

At the same time, in the process of implementation, the project has trained 4 staff of Phu Tho Center for Science and Technology Application to grasp the process of multiplication by the method of tissue culture and the technique of golden sweet potato cultivation. .

Mr. Pham Van Long, Director of Xuan Son National Park (Tan Son district) said in 2011, Xuan Son National Park implemented the pilot model "Application of tissue culture technology to produce yellow-floor sweet potatoes. " , with the aim of preserving the source of the yellow-tailed potato gene, providing seeds for large-scale cultivation.

After the pilot, the results showed that the yellow floor sweet potato product was of good quality, taking the initiative in sewing quality and disease-free seed sources for the next crop. Through the results of the model, it will provide seeds and replicate to the people to plant, to serve the needs of household economic development and aim to create a brand for yellow sweet potatoes to meet local tourism needs and contribute to sustainable forest management in Xuan Son National Park.

Successful piloting of yellow-floor sweet potato by tissue culture method and application of technical advances in seed, planting, and care in the project area will have conditions to expand into a product-producing area with good effect. High fruit (2.5 times higher than corn).

This will be a good condition for people to expand production, increase income and contribute to sustainable poverty reduction in the locality.
