A strong earthquake in southwest Taiwan today scared people of the possibility of a tsunami recurrence like two years ago, killing thousands of people in Asia.
The original Japanese Meteorological Agency said a tsunami could be heading towards the Philippines. But then, an official here called Hiroshi Koide announced: 'The predicted tsunami did not happen. The risk is over. '
The earthquake, which had an initial magnitude of 6.7 to 7.2, shook the whole of Taiwan. There is no information about casualties yet.
Earthquakes occurred on the occasion of the second anniversary of the tsunami that killed nearly 250,000 people in Indonesia, Thailand, India and Sri Lanka.
