The Taklamakan Desert or Taklamakan Desert, also known as the Taklimakan, is a desert in Central Asia, in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China. It is bordered by the Kunlun Mountains to the south, and the Pamir Mountains and Tian Shan (ancient name of Mount Imeon) to the west and north.
The Taklamakan is known as one of the largest deserts in the world, ranking 15th in size among the world's largest non-polar deserts. It covers an area of 270,000 km² of the Tarim Basin, which is about 1,000 km long and about 400 km wide. At the northern and southern edges of the desert are two branches of the Silk Road that were sought out by travelers seeking to avoid the arid wasteland.
