This year, 157 students from 16 countries in Asia and the Middle East participated in the contest, including five Vietnamese student teams: LH - Gold Energy (Lac Hong University - Dong Nai). , Bio-Energy (Hanoi University of Science and Technology), DHCN-Auto (Hanoi Industrial University), IUH Knights and IUH Galaxy from Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry.

Participating teams have more than a year to design and build energy-efficient cars. Members can design new vehicles or reuse vehicles and equipment that have participated in the competition and choose among eight different types of fuel to compete in, from diesel, batteries, bioethanol until solar energy. In the competition, it will not take into account the speed factor - any team that can drive the farthest distance with only one liter of fuel and have the creative idea of fuel economy that can be applied will actually become the most efficient team to use fuel.

Shell Eco-Marathon is a global competition that began in 1939 at a Shell research lab in the US, stemming from a race between two scientists to see who has It is possible to reach the maximum distance per gallon of fuel by your means.
