Vietnam has 2 new mathematicians
Professor Phan Quoc Khanh and Hoang Xuan Phu are two Vietnamese scientists who have been elected as academicians in the field of mathematics by the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).

TWAS has just released a list of 52 newly elected academicians from 10 different fields. Particularly in the field of mathematics, Vietnam has two scientists mentioned above; the remaining two Brazilian researchers are Lopes Artur Oscar and Shestakov Ivan.
Professor Phan Quoc Khanh was born in 1946, is the Dean of the Mathematics Department of Ho Chi Minh City National University. He is considered the leading mathematician in Vietnam. Professor Khanh is an expert on optimal theory.

According to the website of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Mathematics, Professor Khanh defended his doctoral thesis in 1978 and a doctorate of science in 1988 at the Institute of Mathematics, the Polish Academy of Sciences. The results of his research led to important developments in the field of vector optimization, equilibrium problems and variational inequalities. He is also the Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Mathematical Society, a member of the American Mathematical Society.
Professor and doctor of science Hoang Xuan Phu was born in 1956, worked at the Institute of Mathematics. He studied the theory of control and optimization, numerical analysis as well as applications of these fields. He defended his doctoral thesis in 1983 and a doctor of science in 1987 at the University of Leipzig, Germany. He is the editor-in-chief of the Vietnam Journal of Mathematics, and a member of the Committee of Developing Countries, International Mathematical Federation (CDC-IMU). Professor is also an Associate Professor of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
Two professors are also members of the Scientific Council of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Mathematics.
The Third World Academy of Sciences has 1,110 members, including Vietnamese scientists like Professor Nguyen Van Hieu, Dao Vong Duc, Ngo Viet Trung, Ha Huy Khoai, Dao Trong Thi, Le Tuan Hoa, Phan Quoc Khanh and Hoang Xuan Phu.
