Vietnam won the IAEA's award for mutating rice varieties
Within the framework of the 58th General Meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) last week, on the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Joint Laboratory of the IAEA and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Application of nuclear engineering in agriculture and food, I AEA has awarded awards to individuals and organizations of member countries that have many achievements in the field of mutation to create seeds and contribute effectively to ensuring food security and sustainable development.
Vietnam has won 3 out of 23 awards, including an award of 'Excellent Achievement' for Vietnam Agricultural Genetics Institute.
The IAEA awards are considered primarily based on the steady development of newly created varieties as well as the extent and scale of economic and social impacts brought about by new varieties for the people.
Genetic mutation techniques , accelerating the selection and gene transformation in nature, have been applied in Vietnam since the 1970s.
With the help of the IAEA, from the 80s of the last century, through projects of technical cooperation, agricultural research facilities of Vietnam such as the Institute of Agricultural Genetics, Southern Institute of Agricultural Sciences , Mekong Delta Rice Institute . has achieved many outstanding achievements, launched a number of new rice varieties with high productivity, quality and ability to withstand high salinity and salinity.
