Vista: The voice command feature
Microsoft software giant has admitted that voice recognition within the new operating system Vista may be attacked by hackers, and the PC will order itself to delete files or directories.
One of Vista's new features is that the operating system can receive voice commands. But in parallel with it is the worry when accessing malicious websites or audio files.
Many users have imagined the prospect of an MP3 file recording a hacker 's speech used to instruct a PC to wipe data from the machine. For its part, Microsoft thinks that "technically, it can exploit this vulnerability", but currently, there is nothing to worry about.
Source: AP According to Microsoft, to exploit the vulnerability, hackers must first enable voice recognition in the phone and turn on both the mic and the speaker. In addition, some other technical barriers also make hijack difficult.
Is it a nightmare?
The voice recognition feature in Vista receives commands like "Copy", "delete", "shutdown" . and executes them, a Microsoft security expert writes on its official blog. .
Some users have tried to exploit this vulnerability and as a result, they have deleted some files, cleaned up the trash, making these documents permanently unrecoverable.
Microsoft says that even if the computer is "prompted" to receive the order, it is unlikely that there will be no one at the time. "Surely the user must be nearby and they will hear the malicious command sounded". Besides, voice commands do not apply to high priority functions such as creating new users or reformatting drives.
Another researcher also listed more difficult barriers: clarity of the command, mic reflections and spatial correlation between speaker and mic.
In fact, the voice recognition feature has emerged from the Windows XP operating system, but to Vista, it has just been expanded.
" We are investigating the reports seriously. However, I personally believe there is no need to worry about such issues, " the expert said.
