Energy storage captures energy when it is available and releases it later, helping power systems match supply with demand across timescales from seconds to seasons.
Energy storage separates production from use
Electric grids must keep supply and demand closely balanced. Storage lets energy produced at one moment be used at another. A battery stores electrical energy through reversible chemical reactions; pumped hydropower stores gravitational potential energy; thermal systems store heat; other technologies use compressed air, flywheels or fuels.
Different technologies are suited to different durations, power levels, locations and cycling patterns. There is no single storage technology that is best for every grid need.
Why storage is useful on an electric grid
Fast storage can help regulate frequency and respond to sudden changes. Multi-hour systems can shift solar energy from midday into the evening. Longer-duration storage can help during extended weather events, transmission constraints or seasonal imbalances.
Storage can also provide backup power, defer some infrastructure upgrades and help isolated systems use local renewable generation more effectively.
Efficiency, capacity and power are different
Power, usually measured in watts, tells how quickly a storage system can charge or discharge. Energy capacity, measured in watt-hours, tells how much energy it can hold. Duration is roughly capacity divided by power. Round-trip efficiency describes how much of the input energy is recovered after charging and discharging.
Cost comparisons must also consider lifetime, degradation, maintenance, safety, materials, siting and how often the system is used.
Storage and renewable electricity
Wind and solar output varies with weather and time of day. Storage can reduce curtailment and move some generation to periods of higher demand, but it works alongside transmission, flexible demand, diverse generation and forecasting rather than replacing them.
As grids change, the value of a storage project depends on the services it can provide, not simply on the number of batteries installed.
