Xinhua quoted Indonesia's Meteorological and Geophysical Agency as saying that the first earthquake had a magnitude of 5.3 Richter and occurred at 4:30 am local time. Its epicenter is about 199 km northwest of Saumlaki city, Maluku province and lies 210 km deep.

69 minutes after another seismic, magnitude 5, hit Sumatra. Its epicenter is about 65 km southwest of Bintuhan city, Bengkulu province and is located at a depth of 24 km.

Indonesia is constantly suffering from earthquakes because the island nation is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area shaped like a horseshoe and about 40,000 km long. Every year about 71% of the world's strongest earthquakes occur at the Pacific Ring of Fire.
