According to Chile's Agriculture and Livestock Agency (SAG), dead birds were discovered by tourists on a beach in the town of Lenga, Concepcion city, on May 16. More than 1,300 birds belong to the family Procellariidae . They can drown after being caught in a fishing net, or dying of a disease like bird flu.

The AFP quoted SAG information yesterday that it is investigating a researcher who caused this mysterious death. The process of collecting and analyzing is being carried out at the research facility.

A similar phenomenon occurred in the area in 2010, when hundreds of birds died from entanglement in fishing nets.
