Alacahoyuk is the religious capital of the Hittites, a people living in the ancient Anatolia (Asia Minor) around 1600 BC. Their previous capital was Hattusha, an archaeological site recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage in Turkey today.

"The tunnel is usually built under the stronghold and extends into the city. I believe there are other tunnels in the area. We dug 23 m but I think the secret tunnel is longer than that. It may have a sacred function, " Cinaroglu said.
