According to online voting at www.new7wonders.com and phone messages, organizers New7Wonders - a non-profit organization announced the results of the new seven wonders of the world as follows:
- The Great Wall of China
- Colosseum arena in Rome
- Taj Mahal Temple in India
- The ancient city of Petra in Jordan
- Christ the Redeemer Statue in Brazil.
- Machu Picchu - a mountain settlement, symbolizing the Inca empire in Peru.
- Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, Mexico.
In a speech at the launch of the new 7 Wonders of the World, actor Hilary Swank said: "There has never been a lot of people in history to take part in such a global decision."
The organizing committee of the 7 wonders of the world said that this competition is an opportunity to raise the level of global cultural playing field and acknowledge the achievements of society outside Europe and the Middle East. The 7 wonders of the world have existed for over 2,000 years and all in the Mediterranean region. Among the 7 wonders of the ancient world, only Giza Pyramid is standing firm.
These 7 wonders beat 14 other nominated locations, including the Eiffel Tower in France, Easter Island in the Pacific, Statue of Liberty in the US, Russia's Kremlin, Acropolis in Athens and Sydney Opera House. .
The campaign nominated 7 new world wonders initiated by Bernard Weber, a Swiss citizen, an adventurous citizen in 1999. There are about 200 nominated locations and the list is shortened to 21 points for every voters in 2006. Organizers confess that there is no way to prevent people from voting more than once for their favorite location.
In the competition, Colosseum Arena, Great Wall, Machu Picchu, Taj Mahal and Petra are always on the list from the first month but the Lord's Statue has recently received many votes.
The Statue of Liberty and the Australian Opera are always at the bottom of the list. Among the "failed" sites are Cambodia's Angkor neighborhood, Alhambra in Spain, Kiyomizu temple in Japan, Stonehenge in England.
