This species is found in evergreen forest at elevations above 1,000 meters in the Kon Tum plateau and named after Professor Thomas Ziegler (Cologne Zoo). This is the fifth new species found in Vietnam.
New species of salamander discovered in Kon Tum province belongs to the genus Pseudocalotes and is named after Professor Thomas Ziegler (Cologne Zoo), who has published many works related to studies of reptiles and frogs in our country .
The new species, Pseudocalotes ziegleri , has the following identification characteristics: body length of about 68-78 mm; long tail about 127-168 mm; throat without crest; 6-7 spines on the nape; no rows of spines between the spine; 57-64 scales around the middle of the body, flanks without burrs, stacked on the back; thin plates under the third toe form a serrated shape; body is gray or light brown with scattered dark spots.

This species supports the evergreen forest at an altitude of over 1,000 meters in the Kon Tum plateau. The standard sample of this species was collected in the biodiversity research cooperation program between the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources with the World Conservation Fund - Indochina Program (WWF) and the Green Animal Institute Petersburg (Russia).
Since 2004, this is also the fifth new salamander to be discovered in Vietnam after the Asian species Acanthosaura nataliae (2006), the long-tailed salamander ooc-lop Bronchocela orlovi (2004), the tail-goose Long Vietnam Brochocela vietnamensis (2005), and Nhông kon tum Pseudocophotis kontumensis (2007).
