At a depth of nearly 5000m, the ocean contains creatures like stepping out of horror movies
You do not need to enter the universe to discover the mysteries, biodiversity off the east coast of Australia also hidden things equally interesting.
Off the east coast of Australia there is a sea basin (abyss) at depths of 4000 - 6000m, here is almost permanently dark. The temperature is about 2-3 degrees Celsius, creating an extremely limited environment for food.
The sea area is the largest and deepest habitat on earth, they occupy 50% of the world's oceans and 1/3 of Australia's territory. However, this is an area where human knowledge is still limited.
In 2017, researchers from the Australian Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) did not stop sending equipment down to a depth of ~ 4876m. There, they had the opportunity to interact with more than 100 different species through an exploratory vessel. In it, 5 species have never been discovered. This is confirmed by researchers to "extend the scientific frontier" and wait for the newly named creatures at the Australian National Fish Conference (ANFC).
Let's admire some found in the east coast of Australia:
1. Red spiked crab
Red thorn crabs are literally "spiked" to protect them from deep-sea predators. Scientists predict that it is related to the hermit crab species.
2. Glass sponge
Its skeleton is made of silica fiber network, can be up to 1m long. They eat by filtering bacteria and other unicellular organisms from water passing through the fragile glass shell.
3. Coffin fish (Coffinfish) - It is likely to be a new species
4. Peanut Worms (Peanut Worm)
Peanut worms (Sipuncula) are a marine worm that, when threatened, can sunk into looking like peanuts. This species can reproduce naturally and asexually.
5. Cookiecutter sharks
This little friend has teeth like a saw blade, living in the "twilight zone" of the ocean, a depth of about 1000m. It hunts big fish, sometimes humans by biting into the flesh, tearing out biscuit-sized pieces. Therefore, it is temporarily called "Cookiecutter".
6. Lizard fish
At a depth of 1000 - 2500m, being a predator is not very easy because there is very little food. Lizard fish can move very far to maximize scarce resources.
7.
Appears at a depth of 4000m, its scientific name is Typhlonus, but is often referred to as an invisible fish. This species has also been found in the Arabian Sea, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Japan and Hawaii.
8. Crunchy sea stars
Crunchy sea stars are found from Siberia to Antarctica, but we know nothing about this species.
9. Dumbo octopus
Dumbo octopus waved its fins like ears, like the Disney character of the same name.
10. Zombie worms
Zombie worms (Osedax) are often found in rotting whale carcasses on the ocean floor. Without mouth, intestines or anus, they digest with bacteria.
