Bac Can preserves rare native native sticky rice varieties

Bac Can Phuc province successfully coated indigenous sticky rice varieties with rare and precious genetic resources named 'Khau nua luy'. This has contributed to preserving the dominant characteristics, breeding, providing ethnic minorities intensive farming, increasing income.

'Khau nua litchi' is a native sticky rice variety of the ethnic minorities in the northern communes of Ngan Son district, with outstanding features such as large, regular rice seeds, when sticky rice, sticky rice cakes are very flexible and delicious. . Therefore, the price of this type of rice is usually twice as high as that of ordinary sticky rice and very rare in the market because people do not have much to sell. Want this kind of rice on the occasion of Lunar New Year, many families in Bac Can town have to book in advance.

However, due to traditional cultivation methods, not carefully selected, this rice variety is increasingly degenerated, separating too many lines, unable to retain dominant characteristics, many pests and diseases only about 30 quintals per hectare.

Facing the above situation, from 2012 to now, Bac Can Department of Science and Technology cooperated with the Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology - Northern mountainous forestry to study, restore and develop this rice variety.

Initially, the two agencies mentioned above selected more than 400 dissociation lines, took samples of rice to analyze typical characteristics of the variety, selected 14 households in Thuong Quan commune to directly implement on an area of 0.5 hectares. individual and two-hectare restoration of populations with regular guidance and supervision of researchers.

From more than 400 lines of separation, to the first case select more than 200 lines, the second case selects 18 lines and to the third case selects the four most elite lines that the researcher calls the super-primordial. From here, propagation is pure for extensive cultivation.

In the fourth crop, farmers in Thuong Quan commune cultivated the original 'hard-to-use' variety on an area of more than ten hectares. As a result, the primitive breed grows well, disease-free, flat-flowering, productivity increases by 10 quintals per hectare compared to before and maintains the outstanding, aromatic, pliable and nutritious points.

Dr. Do Tuan Shield, Director of Bac Can Department of Science and Technology, said that successful restoration is a decisive factor to preserve and develop sticky rice variety 'Khau nua luy' in the locality.

'At this point, we will study and experiment to transplant this rice variety into the northern districts of the province with the characteristics of the earth and climate like in Thuong Quan commune to replicate, creating this rice production area to become a commodity for farmer. When developing an area of 200 ha or more of Khau Khau rice, the province will coordinate with the Northern Mountainous Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute to implement a project to build a collective brand for Khau nua Litch is aimed at increasing income for local ethnic minorities , 'he said.
