Each family in Beijing, China, is only allowed to raise a dog. This is part of an effort to quell rabies, the disease that killed 318 Chinese people in September.
This policy will be applied in 9 areas in Beijing. Big and dangerous dogs will also be banned. Anyone who has a dog without a license will be prosecuted.
Those who want to give up this four-legged pet must bring them to the governing body if they don't want to be fined for abandoning their dogs. The owners are also not allowed to take dogs for a walk in public places.
Beijing police website posted a call for dog owners to " create a harmonious society and civilized owners ".
The number of people dying from rabies in China is increasing while only 3% of dogs are vaccinated.
