Breakthroughs in hydrogen production do not emit toxic gases

This is considered a breakthrough achievement in clean energy production process as well as the fight against climate change.

The Canadian team said it has successfully developed a method to extract hydrogen from oil without emitting greenhouse gases.

This is considered a breakthrough achievement in clean energy production process as well as the fight against climate change.

Unlike gasoline and diesel, hydrogen energy when burning does not pollute the air. This energy source can burn to produce electricity and is also used by some car manufacturers to operate vehicles.

The hydrogen energy used for vehicles today is mainly taken from natural gas and this hydrogen separation process produces a greenhouse gas methane. To date, widespread deployment of hydrogen technology is still limited due to expensive hydrogen separation.

The cost of producing hydrogen by the new method is about 0.1-0.5 USD / kilo.

Chief executive of Proton Technologies, Grant Strem, and his team have developed a method to extract hydrogen directly from oil and sand oil deposits without emitting methane and CO2.

The research team pumped oxygen into oil fields, causing the underground temperature to rise, releasing the only product, hydrogen. The cost of producing hydrogen by the new method is about 0.1-0.5 USD / kilo, compared to the price of about 2 USD / kilo today.

The team said the technology promises the potential to meet all of Canada's electricity needs for the next 330 years, without emitting greenhouse gases. Furthermore, the new, low-cost method can provide energy for the world to use primarily existing infrastructure. The results of the study are published at the Goldschmidt geochemistry conference in Barcelona, Spain.

Experts welcomed the research achievements of Canadian researchers. According to scientists, hydrogen production from hydrocarbons using oxygen is not new, but the problem lies in how carbon dioxide is not released into the surrounding environment. With the new method, carbon gases remain in the ground.
