Breeding chickens to produce electricity

A large farm - belonging to Deqingyuan agricultural technology company in the outskirts of Beijing (China) - raised 3 million chickens and gave "oven" to three different types of products: chicken eggs, fertilizer and electricity.

The farm supplies 70% of chicken eggs for Beijing, but eggs are not the only product of this farm, the BBC reported on June 25.

Every day, 3 million chickens here produce 212 tons of manure and this fertilizer is used to produce electricity.

Chicken manure in the barn will go into the trough, then be transferred down a conveyor belt to a treatment plant.

The treatment plant will separate methane from chicken manure to generate electricity, and electricity will be sold to the national grid.

After separation of methane, chicken manure will be processed into fertilizer.

Pan Wenzhi, vice president of agricultural technology company Deqingyuan, said: " The amount of coal to generate electricity for China may be scarce in the next few decades."

'Therefore, chicken manure can be one of the alternative sources of energy for efficient, economical and environmental protection,' said Wenzhi.

According to BBC, coal-fired thermal power still accounts for 70% of China's electricity production.
