Cervarix can prevent two lines of papillomavirus (HPV) of HPV 16 and HPV 18. Scientists of GSK use a computer system to predict the test results of using this vaccine for all 12-year-old girls in the UK.
According to the results of this study, the number of infected people will be reduced from 2,636 people to 632 people and the number of deaths will be reduced from 1,403 people to 335 people (all at 76%) if Cervarix is used. If all 100% of women were vaccinated, it would be impossible for GSK to say that with only 80% of people taking the drug, the death rate would also decrease by 61%. Doctor Anne Szarewski said that the ability to prevent cervical cancer by vaccination is a very encouraging idea.
Another pharmaceutical company is Merck & Co. Inc. also produced vaccines for this disease. The European Medicines Agency has approved the use of Gardasil to prevent cervical cancer due to 4 strains of HPV. Gardasil has also been approved for use by the US Food and Drug Administration in June.
