(Photo: metcn8) It was announced by Mr. Zhou Guangyuan (Zhu Guangyao), Deputy Secretary of State in charge of China's Environmental Protection Agency at the 11th International Conference on Natural Lakes, opening. November 1 in Nanchang capital of Jiangxi province.
Zhou also said that 75% of China's 20,000 natural lakes and thousands of artificial lakes are polluted with nitrogen-containing wastewater, phosphorus and other toxic substances.
In Hubei Province, famous as a "lake paradise" , in the 50s of the last century there were 522 large lakes, so far only 217 lakes; The total area of natural lakes in this province has decreased by 34%.
According to Mr. Zhou, the main reason for the decrease in lake area in China is because industrial activities in the industrial way use too much water and pollute the ecosystems in lakes and swamps.
During the two days of the conference, more than 200 environmental experts and officials from the countries discussed measures to manage the lake, sharing experiences in balancing agricultural development with protecting the lake. In addition, the conference also discussed bird flu and the issue of conservation of the natural environment.
At the conference, Marion Hammerl, chairman of the Global Natural Protection Fund (GNF) warned that the process of industrialization and urbanization seriously affects the biodiversity of lakes.
He called on governments and international organizations to coordinate efforts to prevent lake pollution and enhance protection of lakes and marshes.
