China is constructing the S-shaped cross-sea bridge connecting 36 km long Ningbo City with Shanghai. This $ 1.5 billion construction project will become the planet's longest sea bridge.
The bridge connecting Ningbo and Shanghai will help reduce travel time between these two most important port cities in China from 4 hours to 2 hours. It is expected to be inaugurated in June 2008 and become a new driving force for the most prosperous economic region in the mainland.
Like many other Chinese cities, Ningbo is carrying out the tradition of the ancients: "If you want to be rich, you have to do it first." The city plans to invest more than 30 billion yuan (US $ 4 billion) from 2006 to 2010 to build railways, highways and bridges.
Executive director of a German consulting firm Ralph Fohr said: "This bridge will make my return between Ningbo and Shanghai shorter and cheaper than before". He said he was preparing his luggage to fly back to Shanghai after attending a fair in Ningbo. Almost every week this entrepreneur also came from Shanghai to Ningbo for work.
Ningbo is located between the industrial center of Zhejiang Province, a high concentration of private enterprises in China. The city of 5.5 million people is also home to many famous manufacturers in China such as mobile phone maker Ningbo Bird and textile company Younger.
