Crocodile is homesick
3 crocodiles in Australia have surprised the experts to pass the distance of 402 km to return home after being relocated.
Scientists have discovered this shift thanks to tracking devices mounted on the body of alligators.
Usually, saltwater crocodiles caught near crowded beaches or rivers in Australia will be taken to remote places. But this evacuation policy is being reviewed because it seems that this animal has a very high memory of homesickness.
" We still think that alligators are tired very quickly, but here we see clearly that they can pass long distances from day to day, " said Professor Craig Franklin at the University of Queensland.
A large crocodile is captured on the west coast of Queensland's Cape York Peninsula. It was carried by plane to the east coast. Within 3 weeks, she returned home, after a length of 402 km.
Other crocodiles when tested also performed the same. According to scientists, they are no different from boomerangs.
" Crocodiles have relatives closer to birds than any reptile, so they can use a bird-like navigation system ," Professor Franklin added.
