In the eyes of many people, Turkey shows up with colorful images: red poppy fields, colorful mosques and spinning dance with monks wearing white or sema .
The sema creator was Hazreti Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi , often called Rumi, in the 13th century. Born in 1207 in what is now Afghanistan, Rumi escaped the Mongol invasion and eventually settled in Konya - now located in central Anatolia, Turkey. Rumi's father came from a monastic family, which led him to religion. However, it was not until the meeting with Hazreti Shamsuddin, a Muslim leader in Tabriz, that Rumi became a spiritual leader, inspiring the Mevlevi monastery of a secular Muslim sect.

One day, at the market, Rumi encountered the rhythmic hammers of gold apprentices. Hearing that sound sequence, Rumi thought of Allah, started to open her arms and spin.
After Rumi died in 1273, the sema was refined and formalized by the family and his followers.Sema becomes a ritual of remembrance of Allah , which aims to clean up the mind and heart to receive God's guidance. When spinning, all dancers are directed towards Allah. Their headgear represents the tomb of the ego and the white dress represents the shroud of the ego. The rotation, can be up to 30 times per minute, always counterclockwise.
Not only are spiritual meanings, sema dance also positively affects the overall health. According to Fadel Zeidan, assistant professor at the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of California (USA), sema is a kind of mindfulness meditation, directing focus on the breath to make the mind flexible and know more about control.
"Mind is like physical," said Zeidan, "Like muscle, if you practice, your mind will become stronger and stronger".
For people with chronic pain, mindfulness meditation like sema is more important. Pain infiltrates thoughts, makes patients anxious, depressed, lazy and aggravated. To relieve the pain, it is best to combine exercise with a mental training method that sema is a great combination.
Besides, Zeidan discovered that mindfulness does not use the body's mechanism of addiction to relieve pain. He explained: "When you have foot pain, your body will release endogenous opioids to relieve pain. However, mindfulness does not use this body. We do not know what it is but are learning more. What is it? It is amazing in these ancient techniques. "
