Detecting signs of ancient tsunami in Nghe An province

Some of the most recent surveys show that there may have been three tsunami matches that occurred at time intervals: 4,500-4,300; 4,100-3,900 and 900-600 years ago.

The Institute of Geophysics under the Vietnam Institute of Science and Technology has carried out a number of scientific research projects on tsunami in Vietnam and initially stated that abnormalities exist in the coastal areas of Nghe An. geology, especially the occurrence of oyster grounds containing tincture containing shellfish.

Associate Professor and Doctor Cao Dinh Trieu of the Institute of Geophysics said that scientists of the Institute have discovered and discovered some scallops and oysters in Quynh Van, Nghi Tien and Dien Chau towns. Under coastal sandy beaches such as Nghi Yen for a period of 4,500-4,300 years and it is impossible to explain the formation of these scallops is due to the ancient people eating and hulling into piles, or by creating movements.

The initial findings and research on tsunami in Nghe An may draw some possibility and tsunami earthquake levels that may occur in Vietnam.

Associate Professor and Doctor Cao Dinh Trieu said that in the biggest earthquake case occurred in Manila submerged zone (Philippines), with a level of 9 Richter scale, can cause maximum tsunami to Nghe An coast with degree maximum height 7m.

For the source area is the Baram fault zone and with an earthquake of 8 on the Richter scale, tsunamis can hit Nghe An coast with a height of just over 1m. If an earthquake of 7.5 magnitude occurs in the North Central Coast along the Ca river fault, there will be tsunami reaching 10m at the coast of Dien Chau town.

Tsunami is a new research orientation in Vietnam that started in 2005 by conducting surveys of ancient tsunami among scientists of the Institute of Geophysics and experts of the Institute of Earth Physics. belongs to the Russian Federation.

Since then, there have been a number of works published the initial results of recognition of the possibility of ancient tsunamis along the coastal strip and islands of Vietnam.
